Before trying to make a call, you should always verify the number you are dialing. You will need to know the international access code (IDD), country code and city code as well as the number you are trying to reach.

When dialing international calls from North America, you first need to dial the international access code which is 011. This access code is also used if calling from Puerto Rico and the following Caribbean islands: Anguilla , Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Island. If you are calling from most European countries, the international access code is 00. However if you are calling from different country you can check the access code (IDD) as well as the country codes here.

Say we are calling a hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil to confirm a reservation. I am calling from the USA.

Dial the International access code 011 then country code for Brazil is 55, then the city code for Sao Paulo, the city code is 11 and the number to the hotel is 2838 1234. So I would dial 011 55 11 2838 1234.

VoilĂ  you are connected.
